Betonica officinalis, commonly known as betony, is a perennial plant that is relatively easy to grow from seed, though germination can be erratic. It’s best sown in fall outdoors or indoors with cold stratification, or directly in spring. The plant thrives in poor to moderately fertile, well-drained soil and prefers full sun to partial shade. 

Seed Sowing and Germination: Stachys betonica

• Outdoor Sowing: Fall sowing is recommended, with seeds sown thinly on a high-quality seed starting mix and lightly covered. Keep the soil consistently moist, but not wet, and avoid using a humidity dome. Bottom watering is preferred.
• Indoor Sowing: Seeds can be started indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost, or even all year round on a warm, bright windowsill. Soak seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours, then store them in damp sand or kitchen towel in the refrigerator for about eight weeks to break dormancy.
• Germination: Germination can be slow and irregular, taking anywhere from 1-3 months. Maintain consistent moisture and avoid direct sunlight.
• Cold Stratification: For indoor sowing, cold stratification (placing seeds in a cold, moist environment) for a period of time can help break dormancy and improve germination rates. This can be achieved by placing the seed tray in the refrigerator for a few weeks before moving it to a warmer location.
